古来、蝶は卵から幼虫、さなぎを経て成虫となる姿に
しばしば成長や変化変容、夢幻や復活のイメージを託されて
世界各地の神話や民話に登場する。
胡蝶の夢の故事やギリシャ神話のプシュケなどが一例であろう。
かろやかに舞うその存在は、もろく儚い生物でもあり、
また大陸や海を渡って生息地を得るたくましい生物でもある。
多くの人が、ちょうちょを眺めて
のどかだなあと思ったことがあるだろう。
身近で平穏な心象風景のなかにある蝶。
昨今の不穏な情勢に生きているからこそ、
蝶のようなたくましくも平和な世界のイメージも、
いつも心に持っていたい。

Since ancient times, butterflies have appeared in myths and folktales across the world, their life cycle—from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis and finally adult—often evoking images of growth, transformation, the ephemeral, and resurrection. Examples include the story of ‘The Butterfly’s Dream’ and the figure of Psyche from Greek mythology.
Though their light, dancing presence suggests a fragile and fleeting creature, they are also resilient beings capable of crossing continents and seas to find new habitats.
Many people have likely gazed at a butterfly and felt a sense of peace. The butterfly exists within a familiar, tranquil mental landscape.
Precisely because we live in these turbulent times, we wish to hold onto that image of serenity, resilience and peace at all times.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were moments when I found beauty even in the most ordinary of scenes. And it was precisely that sense of beauty that served as a ‘safety net’, sustaining me and enabling me to keep moving forward. Since then, I have continued to create net-like patterns using fine lines through the technique of screen printing.
